Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a bachelor degree or higher (ABS Skill Level 1). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

You'll need to get across complex, constantly changing legislation across multiple states and the Commonwealth. Compliance work is detail-heavy and mistakes can cost organisations serious money in penalties. The role often involves pushing back against business units who see environmental requirements as obstacles, which creates ongoing tension. Automation risk is medium: regulatory reporting is increasingly digitised.

Where the jobs are

Most roles are office-based in metro areas, though some involve site visits to regional operations. Remote work is possible for reporting and compliance work, but site audits and stakeholder meetings usually require being on-ground.

Pay

A$2,845 a week
