Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a bachelor degree or higher (ABS Skill Level 1). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

You'll carry emotional weight from clients' trauma and crises every day, and there's a real risk of burnout. Pay is modest compared to other health degrees, especially in community services. Building a private practice takes years to become financially stable, and you'll face mandatory reporting obligations that can create legal and ethical complexity when child safety or abuse is disclosed.

Where the jobs are

Jobs concentrate in major cities within community health services, not-for-profit organisations, and private practice. Regional areas have fewer positions. Remote counselling is growing but most employers prefer face-to-face initial sessions, limiting work-from-home flexibility.
