Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a bachelor degree or higher (ABS Skill Level 1). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

The role is also detail-heavy and repetitive: month-end closes, reconciliations, and compliance tasks dominate your time, leaving less room for strategic work than the job description suggests.

Where the jobs are

Practically speaking, regional Australia has far fewer positions: they typically exist only in regional offices of big national firms. Remote work is possible but less common than in pure accounting roles.
