Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a diploma, advanced diploma or associate degree (ABS skill level 2). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

You carry responsibility for running the business while the partners own the legal decisions, so you can feel caught between lawyers, staff and clients. Mistakes in billing, trust account records or record keeping can have serious professional consequences for the practice. Deadlines are constant, and some law firms have a demanding culture with long hours.

Where the jobs are

Most roles are in capital cities, where law firms are concentrated, with fewer positions in regional centres. Larger firms may have a dedicated practice manager, while in smaller practices the role may be combined with office management or bookkeeping. The work is mostly on-site, though some firms may allow hybrid work.
