Freight Forwarder
A Freight Forwarder organises the movement of goods between countries or across domestic supply chains on behalf of importers and exporters. The role sits at the intersection of logistics, compliance, and customer service.
What this job is
Freight Forwarders act as the go-between for businesses that need to move cargo and the carriers, customs brokers, and port authorities that make it happen. The core of the job is coordinating shipments, preparing documentation such as bills of lading and export declarations, and making sure goods clear customs without delays. Forwarders also negotiate freight rates, track shipments in transit, and advise clients on the most cost-effective routing options. It is a role built on detail, because a single error on a customs form can hold up an entire container.
Day-to-day
A typical day could involve checking the status of several active shipments, responding to client queries about delivery timelines, and liaising with shipping lines or air freight carriers to confirm bookings. Preparing and reviewing export or import documentation takes up a significant portion of the day. There may also be time spent calculating freight costs, arranging cargo insurance, and coordinating with warehouses on pickup or delivery schedules. When something goes wrong, such as a port delay or a documentation discrepancy, the forwarder is usually the first person the client calls.
Who does this now
How many people do this work is not published. This role is grouped the way we describe the work, not the way the Census counts it, so there is no Census figure to show.
Is it steady
Digital freight platforms often handle simple shipments. Multi-modal, time-critical and hazardous cargo coordination tend to stay human-led.
Requirements
A Certificate IV or Diploma in Logistics is the typical pathway into this role (JSA Occupation Profile). These qualifications cover supply chain fundamentals, customs procedures, and freight documentation. Some employers also value experience in a related area such as warehousing, customer service, or international trade. You can search for accredited logistics courses at yourcareer.gov.au. Free or subsidised training options may be available through state and territory programs listed at dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe.
The honest hard part
Freight forwarding sounds straightforward on paper, but the reality involves managing multiple moving parts across different time zones, regulatory systems, and carrier networks simultaneously. Customs rules change, shipping schedules shift, and clients expect real-time answers. Career changers coming from outside logistics often underestimate how much technical knowledge is required around tariff classifications, incoterms, and biosecurity requirements. Building that knowledge takes time, and mistakes in documentation can have real financial consequences for clients. The role also tends to involve irregular hours when shipments are delayed or when dealing with overseas partners in different time zones.
Where the jobs are
In practice, freight forwarding activity tends to concentrate around major ports and airports, which points toward capital cities and coastal hubs as likely centres of employment.
