Day-to-day

Prepare surfaces by abrading, grinding, or chemical cleaning to remove rust, old coatings, and contaminants according to Australian Standard AS/NZS 2312 (surface preparation requirements). Select and mix coating materials including primers, topcoats, and specialist paints to achieve required colour, viscosity, and cure time specifications. Operate spray equipment including HVLP (high-volume low-pressure), airless, and air-assist sprayers, adjusting pressure, flow rate, and spray pattern for uniform application. Mask and protect adjacent surfaces and areas not requiring coating using tape, paper, and temporary barriers to prevent overspray and contamination. Apply coatings in multiple passes, maintaining consistent distance and angle from the surface to achieve specified film thickness and finish quality. Monitor humidity, temperature, and ventilation conditions during application to ensure optimal curing and compliance with coating manufacturer specifications. Inspect finished work using visual assessment and measurement techniques to verify even coverage, colour matching, and absence of defects such as runs, sags, or orange peel texture. Clean and maintain spray equipment by flushing lines, replacing nozzles, and storing equipment correctly to prevent clogging and extend equipment life.

Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate II or III (ABS skill level 4). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. The honest hard part

Respiratory health is a real concern. You're breathing in paint vapours and overspray mist daily, even with ventilation and masks. Long-term exposure to isocyanates and volatile organic compounds carries genuine risks. The work is repetitive and physically demanding.

Where the jobs are

Some work exists regionally around large factories, but metro areas dominate. Remote work doesn't apply. Marine coatings work is strongest in port cities.
