Day-to-day
Prepare wall and ceiling surfaces by removing old plaster, cleaning, dampening, and applying primer or base coats according to surface condition and material type. Mix plaster, cement render, lime mortar, and other coating materials to correct consistency using paddle mixers, measuring ratios against product specifications and site requirements. Apply base coats and scratch coats to masonry, brick, and concrete using trowels, floats, and mechanical spray equipment to establish level and bonding foundation. Operate mechanical plaster pumps and spray equipment to coat large surface areas efficiently while maintaining consistent material thickness and surface coverage. Float and finish plaster coats using metal and wooden floats, trowels, and sponges to achieve smooth, textured, or patterned finishes as specified by design or client requirements. Set up and use scaffolding, elevated work platforms, and fall arrest systems to access high walls and ceilings safely in compliance with Safe Work Australia standards. Measure and mark wall surfaces using levels, straightedges, and chalk lines to ensure plaster thickness consistency and alignment with building plans. Cut and fit external angles, beads, and corner reinforcements using hand saws and cutting tools to create clean, durable finished edges.

Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate IV or Certificate III with at least two years of on-the-job training (ABS skill level 3). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.
The honest hard part
Your body takes a beating. Repetitive trowel work causes shoulder, wrist, and back strain that can end careers early. Working at height on scaffolding for years carries cumulative injury risk. The skill ceiling is real too: you'll spend years mastering finishes, but pay doesn't spike dramatically once you're competent. Weather delays and project-based work can mean irregular income.
Where the jobs are
In reality, work concentrates in major metro areas where construction and renovation activity is highest. Regional areas have fewer opportunities unless near growing towns. Work is on-site only, not remote. Residential renovation and new housing construction are your main employers, so you'll follow building booms and busts by state.
Pay
Published for ANZSCO unit group 3332, the wider group this job sits in, not for this job on its own.
This is the median for full-time employees who are not managers and are paid at the adult rate, before tax and salary sacrifice. It is a guide to what the work pays, not a wage rate.
