Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a bachelor degree or higher (ABS Skill Level 1). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.
The honest hard part
You'll spend a lot of time on compliance paperwork and audits rather than science. NATA accreditation demands constant documentation, and if your lab fails an audit, it can shut down operations. Staff turnover in labs is high, so you'll be recruiting and training constantly. The pay ceiling is lower than you might expect for a university degree holder managing budgets and people.
Where the jobs are
Most laboratory manager roles are in capital cities where pathology labs, hospital labs, and research facilities cluster. Regional areas have fewer opportunities. Privately owned pathology networks and hospital systems dominate employment, with some positions in environmental testing and pharmaceutical companies.
