Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a diploma, advanced diploma or associate degree (ABS skill level 2). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

Library funding cuts mean fewer permanent positions and stagnant wages. You'll spend your days on repetitive tasks like labelling, shelving and processing returns. Many roles are part-time or casual, so job security and consistent hours can be hard to find. Also expect medium automation risk as digital systems and self-checkout reduce the need for staff.

Where the jobs are

Most positions are in capital cities and regional centres where public library networks operate. Roles concentrate in council libraries (metro and regional towns), universities, and school libraries. Remote work is rare. Rural areas have fewer opportunities.

Pay
