Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a diploma, advanced diploma or associate degree (ABS skill level 2). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

Museum and gallery jobs are thin on the ground and often part-time or contract-based, meaning job security is poor and you'll likely piece together income from multiple institutions. Pay is modest compared to other technical trades, and you'll hit a ceiling quickly unless you move into curation or conservation (which requires further study). The work is repetitive and detail-focused, which suits some people but feels like watching paint dry to others.

Where the jobs are

Regional centres have fewer opportunities, mainly at local historical societies or smaller galleries. Remote work isn't realistic for this role. Check job boards at specific institutions rather than general sites, as many positions aren't widely advertised.
