Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a diploma, advanced diploma or associate degree (ABS skill level 2). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

You'll need to complete a formal diploma or advanced diploma in electronics before employers take you seriously, and that takes 2 to 3 years part-time or full-time. Many manufacturing jobs are moving offshore or automating, so positions are shrinking. Pay caps out earlier than engineering roles you might have moved from.

Where the jobs are

Some regional work exists in mining equipment support. Remote work is rare since you need to physically test and repair equipment.
