Day-to-day
Operate CAD software (AutoCAD, Revit, or equivalent) to create 2D and 3D technical drawings from sketches and specifications provided by engineers or architects. Produce detailed construction drawings including floor plans, elevations, sections, and detail sheets for building projects. Interpret architect and engineer designs and convert them into accurate, dimensioned working drawings. Create drawings that comply with Australian Standards (AS), National Construction Code (NCC), and local planning requirements. Prepare drawing schedules, legends, and title blocks with relevant project information and revision control. Check drawings for accuracy, consistency, and completeness before submission to project teams. Modify existing drawings in response to design changes, site conditions, or client feedback. Can employers fill these jobs
Employers hiring for this occupation were generally able to find suitable applicants in 2025. This measures how hard employers found it to fill jobs. It is not a count of jobs, and it does not say whether the occupation is growing.
Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a diploma, advanced diploma or associate degree (ABS skill level 2). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.
The honest hard part
You'll spend hours staring at screens perfecting tiny details that most people never notice. The work is repetitive and detail-obsessive, and mistakes can cause expensive construction delays or safety problems. You're also stuck waiting on architects and engineers to give you clear specs, so your workflow depends on others. Pay maxes out lower than engineers who design the projects you draw.
Where the jobs are
Practically speaking, most roles are in metro areas tied to active building sites and engineering consultancies. Regional work exists but is thinner. Remote work is growing but still limited because you often need to attend site meetings and work face-to-face with design teams.
Pay
Published for ANZSCO unit group 3124, the wider group this job sits in, not for this job on its own.
This is the median for full-time employees who are not managers and are paid at the adult rate, before tax and salary sacrifice. It is a guide to what the work pays, not a wage rate.
