Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a bachelor degree or higher (ABS Skill Level 1). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

You'll need a bachelor degree to get the role, which is a big investment if you don't have one. Pay is often lower than other management jobs because manufacturing margins are tight. You'll also be on-call for breakdowns and dealing with shift work or early starts. Automation may reduce some manufacturing roles over time.

Where the jobs are

Food processing and engineering plants cluster in regional areas near raw materials or ports. Remote work is minimal since you need to be on the factory floor.
