Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a bachelor degree or higher (ABS Skill Level 1). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.
The honest hard part
Income is unpredictable and depends entirely on commodity prices, weather, and animal losses: you could have a bad drought or disease outbreak that wipes out years of profit. You're on call seven days a week for animal emergencies, and you need significant capital to start or buy into a farm, which creates real financial risk if things go wrong.
Where the jobs are
Most opportunities are owner-operated rather than employment positions. Few remote work options exist: you need to be on the land.
