Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a bachelor degree or higher (ABS Skill Level 1). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

You're betting your income on cattle prices and weather you can't control. Droughts can wipe out pasture overnight, disease can kill your herd, and meat prices swing wildly. You'll work seven days a week during mustering and calving season with no days off. Entry requires either inheriting land or buying it at huge cost, which most career changers can't afford.

Where the jobs are

Most operations are on private family properties in regional and remote areas, not in cities. You need to own or lease land to operate, so relocation is essential and remote work doesn't apply.
