Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a bachelor degree or higher (ABS Skill Level 1). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

You're juggling three production systems at once with completely different rhythms and failure modes. A crop disease, fish kill, and livestock illness can all hit simultaneously and you're the only person making those calls. Income is lumpy and seasonal across all three, making budgeting brutal. Aquaculture licensing is state-based and constantly tightening on water use and effluent, so regulatory costs keep climbing. Most career changers find the physical workload and weather risk harder than they expected.

Where the jobs are

Some integrated farms exist inland near major rivers. Most are small, family-run businesses rather than large employers, so you'll need to network directly with farmers or check state agriculture department licensing records to find real opportunities.
