Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a bachelor degree or higher (ABS Skill Level 1). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

Research roles are heavily grant-dependent, meaning funding runs out and positions end. You'll spend huge chunks of time writing grant applications that get rejected, not just doing science. Career progression is narrow: most roles cluster in universities where pay plateaus and permanent positions are scarce. Shifting from industry to research mid-career often means taking a pay cut.

Where the jobs are

Government agencies (like Geoscience Australia, CSIRO divisions) are mostly capital-based. Regional work exists in geology and environmental science but is often project-based and temporary. Remote work is rare: labs and field work need physical presence.

Pay

A$1,848 a week
