Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate I or compulsory secondary education (ABS skill level 5). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

The work is physically demanding and seasonal. Harvest periods mean long days in heat, heavy lifting, and repetitive strain injuries from sorting and shelling. Pay caps out quickly without moving into management. Weather and crop failures directly affect your hours and income, making it unstable for career changers with bills to pay.

Where the jobs are

Seasonal contract work is common, so stable full-time positions can be scarce outside peak harvest months.
