Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate II or III (ABS skill level 4). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.
The honest hard part
The work is heavily seasonal with intense harvest periods followed by quiet months, making it hard to plan income or get steady full-time hours year-round. You'll also be exposed to long days in heat, dust, and chemicals, with injury risk from machinery and livestock. Pay typically stays modest even with experience unless you move into management.
Where the jobs are
Work is rural and regional: you'll need to be based near farming areas. Remote work isn't an option.
