Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a bachelor degree or higher (ABS Skill Level 1). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

You're betting your income on weather, water availability, and commodity prices you can't control. A drought or failed harvest can wipe out a year's profit. You'll also need significant capital to buy or lease land and equipment upfront, and trees take 3 to 5 years to produce decent yields. Seasonal labour shortages during harvest are getting worse.

Where the jobs are

Remote work isn't an option: you're on-site managing trees, water systems, and labour year-round.
