Day-to-day

Monitor pulping vats, digesters, and bleaching towers to maintain correct temperature, pressure, and chemical concentration levels. Operate paper machine controls including forming section, press rolls, dryer drums, and calendering equipment to regulate production output and paper quality. Measure and record process parameters such as pH, consistency, brightness, and basis weight using calibrated instruments and digital control systems. Add chemical inputs (sodium hydroxide, chlorine dioxide, hydrogen peroxide) to pulping processes at specified rates and sequences. Perform routine cleaning and maintenance on screens, felts, and forming fabrics to prevent blockages and equipment wear. Respond to process alarms and shut-down signals by isolating affected equipment and notifying supervisors of deviations. Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate I or compulsory secondary education (ABS skill level 5). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

You'll work rotating shifts including nights and weekends for the life of your career, and the Australian paper industry is shrinking. Mills are closing and automating, so job security is genuinely risky right now. The work is also physically demanding with chemical exposure risks that require strict safety protocols.

Where the jobs are

Most mills are in regional areas, not cities. Few remote work options since you need to be on-site to operate machinery and monitor processes constantly.
