Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a bachelor degree or higher (ABS Skill Level 1). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

You'll spend a lot of time selling unpopular ideas. Many of your recommendations will involve cutting jobs or changing how people work, which makes you unpopular with staff and sometimes management. You're also caught between what's theoretically efficient and what actually works in messy real organisations. Reports take months to prepare, then get shelved. The role can feel like pushing a boulder uphill.

Where the jobs are

Local government and larger councils also employ them. Remote work is possible but most positions require regular on-site presence to observe workflows and interview staff. Regional Australia has very few of these jobs.

Pay
