Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a diploma, advanced diploma or associate degree (ABS skill level 2). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

You'll need to learn dense technical standards (AS/NZS 3500, National Construction Code) that change regularly, and most councils won't hire you without plumbing trade experience or a relevant qualification first. The work is repetitive inspection of similar systems, and you're often the bearer of bad news telling tradies their work doesn't meet code, which creates tension on job sites.

Where the jobs are

Local councils employ most plumbing inspectors, so jobs concentrate in major metros where building activity is highest. Regional areas have fewer positions but less competition. Most work is based from council offices with site visits, though some private certification bodies in metros now hire inspectors as building activity increases.
