Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a bachelor degree or higher (ABS Skill Level 1). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

The media industry is shrinking. Print advertising revenue has collapsed, digital ad rates are squeezed, and newsrooms are cutting staff. You'll face constant deadline pressure, on-call stress during breaking news, and the reality that many publications can't afford experienced editors anymore. Pay often caps out below other professions requiring similar qualifications.

Where the jobs are

Remote work is increasingly common for digital content roles, but print and newsroom positions still require on-site presence. Regional and community newspapers exist but offer fewer opportunities and lower pay.
