Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate I or compulsory secondary education (ABS skill level 5). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

Shift work is relentless: you'll work early mornings, late nights, weekends and public holidays as standard. The pay ceiling is low because guards rarely move into higher-paying roles without retraining. You're also exposed to aggressive passengers, and automation is slowly replacing guards on some routes.

Where the jobs are

Regional rail services exist but are limited. Remote work is not an option.
