Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a diploma, advanced diploma or associate degree (ABS skill level 2). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

You'll be on-call for outages at odd hours (nights, weekends, holidays) and responsible when sites go down. The work is reactive firefighting rather than creative. Pay caps out below what developers earn, and you're caught between developers' demands and server teams' constraints with little control over either. Automation is slowly eating routine tasks.

Where the jobs are

Regional opportunities exist but are sparse. Some roles offer remote work, especially with cloud-first organisations, but many require on-site presence for emergency response.
