Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate IV or Certificate III with at least two years of on-the-job training (ABS skill level 3). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

The printing industry is shrinking as businesses shift to digital publishing and online content. Print jobs are becoming fewer and work can be repetitive, doing the same file checks and colour corrections daily. You'll also need to stay on top of constantly changing software versions and file formats, or risk becoming outdated.

Where the jobs are

Some work exists in regional areas but it's limited. Practically speaking, you'll have more options in major metro areas. Remote work is rare since you need to coordinate directly with press operators and handle physical proofing.
