Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a bachelor degree or higher (ABS Skill Level 1). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

The technical skills are learnable, but the real grind is on-call support and after-hours emergency callouts when networks go down at 2am. You'll also need to constantly reskill as vendors push new tools and protocols, and security threats evolve faster than most people can keep up with.

Where the jobs are

Regional Australia has fewer dedicated roles. In practice most roles are metro-based because that's where large organisations needing full-time network teams sit. Remote work is possible once established, but early career means on-site time in major cities.

Pay
