Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a bachelor degree or higher (ABS Skill Level 1). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

You'll need multiple vendor certifications (Cisco, AWS, Azure) that cost thousands and require constant renewal as tech changes. Career changers often struggle with the steep learning curve in your first 2 to 3 years. You're also on call for network outages at 2am, and one mistake can take down an entire organisation's systems, which means high stress and accountability.

Where the jobs are

Regional areas have fewer opportunities unless you work remotely for metro companies. Most positions are in-office or hybrid rather than fully remote, though some cloud-focused roles offer more flexibility.
