Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a bachelor degree or higher (ABS Skill Level 1). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

You'll spend a lot of time documenting and justifying decisions, and companies often see safety as a cost centre rather than an investment. If an incident happens on your watch, you'll face scrutiny from regulators, management, and sometimes legal action. The role can feel thankless because when safety systems work, nothing bad happens and people think it was unnecessary. Pay growth plateaus once you reach mid-level management.

Where the jobs are

Mining, construction, and manufacturing sites in regional areas have steady demand. Healthcare and logistics hubs concentrate in capital cities. In practice, large organisations with complex operations or high-risk work need these roles most.
