Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a bachelor degree or higher (ABS Skill Level 1). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

You'll be caught between academics who resent management and senior leadership chasing funding targets. The role demands constant firefighting: staff conflicts, budget cuts, student complaints, and regulatory changes hit simultaneously. You're also shadowed by government policy swings that reshape funding overnight, making strategic planning feel pointless. Long hours are standard, especially during enrolment peaks.

Where the jobs are

Practically all positions are in Go8 universities, regional universities, and some private higher ed providers. Remote work is rare: you need to be on campus managing people and facilities. Regional universities exist but offer fewer advancement pathways than metro institutions.
