Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a bachelor degree or higher (ABS Skill Level 1). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.
The honest hard part
You'll spend a lot of time managing politics and complaints instead of improving education. Principals often resist your decisions, parents escalate minor issues that waste weeks, and you're caught between what teachers need and what the education department demands. The job is heavily driven by compliance paperwork and government reporting deadlines rather than actual teaching outcomes.
Where the jobs are
These roles exist mainly in metropolitan areas and large regional centres where there are enough schools to justify a regional structure. Rural and remote areas rarely have dedicated regional manager roles; those schools report directly to state offices.
