Returns and Reverse Logistics Coordinator

A Returns and Reverse Logistics Coordinator manages the flow of goods moving backwards through a supply chain, from customers back to warehouses, suppliers, or disposal points. The role sits inside retail, wholesale, and distribution operations where handling returned stock accurately is a daily priority.

What this job is

This role focuses on what happens after a sale goes wrong or a product needs to come back. That could mean a customer returning a faulty item, a retailer sending unsold stock back to a supplier, or a business recovering packaging and parts for reuse. The coordinator tracks these movements, checks items against return policies, arranges credits or replacements, and keeps records so the business knows what stock it has recovered and what it has written off. The work sits at the crossroads of customer service, inventory control, and transport logistics.

Day-to-day

A typical day might start with checking overnight return requests lodged through an online portal or by email. From there, the coordinator contacts carriers to book collection pickups, updates the warehouse management system with incoming stock, and liaises with the customer service team about refund or replacement decisions. Inspecting returned goods, sorting them into categories (resalable, repairable, or write-off), and raising credit notes for suppliers are common afternoon tasks. Reporting on return volumes and reasons is often a weekly requirement for management.

Who does this now

How many people do this work is not published. This role is grouped the way we describe the work, not the way the Census counts it, so there is no Census figure to show.

Is it steady

Online shopping is lifting returns volumes. Automated sorting helps with the sorting. Customer resolution and quality checks tend to stay human-led.

Requirements

The typical entry point is completion of Year 12 combined with relevant work experience (JSA Occupation Profile). A background in warehousing, freight, retail operations, or customer service is commonly valued by employers. Some workers hold a Certificate III or IV in Logistics or Supply Chain Operations, which could strengthen an application. You can search for relevant courses at yourcareer.gov.au or check eligibility for subsidised training at dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe.

The honest hard part

The real challenge in this role is that returns are often treated as a low priority by the broader business, yet errors in the process can create significant stock discrepancies, customer complaints, and financial losses. Coordinators frequently work across multiple systems that do not talk to each other well, chasing information from warehouse staff, transport providers, and finance teams at the same time. The volume of work can spike sharply after peak retail periods such as Christmas or end-of-financial-year sales, and the pressure to process credits quickly while still verifying claims accurately can be difficult to manage. Career progression from this role is possible into broader supply chain or operations management, but it often requires proactively building skills in data analysis and process improvement rather than waiting for formal development opportunities.

Smaller operations exist in other capital cities and some regional centres with significant freight activity.
