Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a diploma, advanced diploma or associate degree (ABS skill level 2). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

You'll spend months away from home on rotating contracts, often 4 to 6 months at sea followed by time off. The certification path is long and expensive: you need years of sea time logged before you can sit for your Master's ticket, and you can't skip steps. The job also carries real legal and personal liability if something goes wrong at sea.

Where the jobs are

Most positions are with international shipping companies rather than purely Australian operators. Many roles involve long international voyages, so work isn't geographically tied to one Australian location: you're based wherever the ship is contracted to sail.
