Swimming Pool and Spa Builder

A swimming pool and spa builder installs pools and spas at homes and public sites, from setting out and excavation through to plumbing, finishing and handover. It is licensed work in Australia. The ABS has no separate code for it and files it inside Home Improvement and Insulation Installers nec, so any official figure on this page describes that wider category.

What this job is

A pool and spa builder takes a job from a set of plans to a finished, filled pool. Most work is on new homes and renovations, either for a pool company or as a subcontractor. Concrete pools are dug, steel fixed, sprayed and finished on site. Fibreglass shells are craned into a prepared hole and levelled. Either way the builder sets out the site, runs the plumbing and filtration, coordinates the electrician and the paver, and handles the barrier and safety sign off. Pool and spa building is licensed work in Australia, and the licence class differs by state and territory, so check the rules with the building authority where you live before you plan a move into it. Barrier and fencing rules are set by state law as well, and they change, so compliance is not something you learn once. One caveat on the data. The ABS files this work inside Home Improvement and Insulation Installers nec, a residual trades category, so any employment, pay or outlook figure on this page belongs to that wider group rather than to pool building.

Day-to-day

Read the plans and set out the pool position, levels and boundary clearances on site. Book and supervise the excavator, and check the hole for depth, shape and services. Fix steel and formwork for a concrete pool, or prepare the base and crane in a fibreglass shell. Run suction and return lines, install skimmers, and pressure test the plumbing before backfill. Set the pump, filter and sanitiser, and coordinate a licensed electrician for power and bonding. Coordinate the tiler, renderer or paver for the interior finish and the surrounds. Fill the pool, balance the water, and commission the equipment. Check the barrier, gates and signage against the rules in your state, and arrange the compliance inspection. Walk the owner through the equipment and hand over the paperwork.

Requirements

The usual path is a construction trade background plus a licence. Many builders come from concreting, plumbing, landscaping or general building, then apply for the pool and spa building licence class in their state or territory. The ABS files this category at skill level 4, which is Certificate II or III, and that reflects the category rather than pool building. There is a Certificate III aimed at swimming pool and spa building, and your state building authority can tell you whether it is the qualification your licence class actually needs. A white card and the usual site safety tickets are standard. Licensing rules, course costs and job outcomes vary by state, so check dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe, yourcareer.gov.au and your state building authority before you commit money to a course.

The honest hard part

This is outdoor physical work in the heat, in mud, and against a handover date the owner has already told their family about. The licence is a real barrier. Your state may want years of relevant construction experience before it will issue one, so this is not a role you move into in a few months from an office job. Cash flow is lumpy for subcontractors, and one failed barrier inspection can hold up a payment. Automation matters less here than in an office job, because most of the work is done by hand on a site, although quoting, design and scheduling software may take out some of the office time.

Where the jobs are

The work is on site and seasonal. Most pools go in over spring and summer, and a wet winter or a slow property market can stop the run of jobs.
