What this job is

A Claims Officer reviews and processes insurance claims, assessing whether each claim meets the policy conditions and deciding what the insurer will pay. They gather evidence, verify details with claimants and third parties, and explain the outcome.

Day-to-day

You'd read through insurance claims, check if they're valid, and decide how much the company should pay. You'd ring customers and other people to get more information, look at documents like receipts and medical reports, and write letters explaining your decisions.

Who does this now

How many people do this work is not published. This role is grouped the way we describe the work, not the way the Census counts it, so there is no Census figure to show.

Requirements

There is no single required qualification. Year 12 is a common starting point, and a Certificate III or IV in insurance or a related field may help. Check yourcareer.gov.au for courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options. You should be good at understanding documents, asking the right questions, and explaining things clearly to people.

The honest hard part

You'll spend your days saying no to people in stressful situations. Many claims get rejected or reduced because they don't meet policy terms, and you're the one delivering that bad news. The emotional weight of refusing someone's claim after a car accident or house fire is real, and you won't get thanked for it. Pay growth is often limited without moving into management.

Where the jobs are

Some insurers operate from regional centres, but remote work is limited because customer phone calls are part of the role. Insurance employment itself concentrates heavily in financial services hubs in CBD areas.
