Claims Triage Officer
A Claims Triage Officer sorts and prioritises incoming insurance or compensation claims so that each one reaches the right team quickly. The role sits at the front end of the claims process, acting as a filter between claimants and specialist assessors. It suits people who are organised, calm under pressure, and comfortable working with a high volume of paperwork and phone contact.
What this job is
Claims Triage Officers review new claims as they arrive, gather basic information, and decide how urgent or complex each case is. They route straightforward claims to standard processing queues and flag complicated or time-sensitive ones for senior staff. The work is largely administrative, but it requires sound judgement because a wrong call early in the process can delay a claimant's outcome significantly. Most roles sit inside insurance companies, workers compensation schemes, or government agencies that handle large volumes of claims.

Day-to-day
A typical day involves opening and logging new claims, checking that required documents are attached, and making initial contact with claimants by phone or email to confirm details. Officers then apply a set of internal criteria to decide the priority level of each claim and assign it to the correct team or case manager. There is regular communication with assessors, medical providers, and sometimes legal representatives. Data entry, file notes, and compliance checks fill the gaps between those conversations. The pace is steady and the workload is volume-driven, so strong time management matters.
Who does this now
How many people do this work is not published. This is a narrower job than the one the Australian Bureau of Statistics counts, and we show a count only where the Census counted the same job.
Is it steady
First-contact claims lodgement and routing. AI triage tools often handle straightforward claims. Complex or multi-party claims typically still require human assessment.

Requirements
The standard entry point is completion of Year 12, combined with relevant work experience in administration, customer service, or a related field (JSA Occupation Profile). No formal degree is required for most entry-level positions, though some employers prefer candidates with a Certificate III or IV in Business Administration or a related discipline. Courses in these areas may be available through your state or territory TAFE system. The honest hard part
The real challenge in this role is maintaining accuracy and composure when the volume is high and claimants are stressed or distressed. Triage decisions made quickly at the front of the process have downstream consequences for real people, so errors carry weight. The work can feel repetitive, and career progression within triage itself is limited. Moving into claims assessment, case management, or team leadership usually requires building a track record over time and, in some streams, taking on additional study. People who come from customer service or admin backgrounds often find the transition into triage manageable, but the emotional load of dealing with claimants in difficult circumstances is something worth considering before making the move.
Where the jobs are
In practice, roles tend to cluster in cities where large insurers, government agencies, and workers compensation bodies maintain their operations, but remote and hybrid arrangements have become more common in this type of administrative claims work.
