Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate II or III (ABS skill level 4). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

You'll spend a lot of time in wet, chlorine-heavy environments doing repetitive chemical testing and cleaning. The work is physically demanding: hauling equipment, scrubbing, and being on your feet all day. Pay is modest and unlikely to rise much without moving into management. Automation of water testing is slowly reducing entry-level positions.

Where the jobs are

Regional areas have fewer positions; most work is permanent or part-time at councils, hotels, and private residential complexes. Remote work doesn't apply to this role.
