Day-to-day

Inspect carpets and furnishings to identify stain types, fibre composition, and cleaning requirements before commencing work. Operate hot water extraction machines (wet cleaning equipment) and dry cleaning machinery to extract dirt and moisture from carpet fibres. Apply pre-treatment and post-treatment chemical solutions, stain removers, and deodorisers appropriate to carpet type and soil condition. Move and position furniture, roll up rugs, and prepare work areas to access carpeted surfaces safely and completely. Test cleaning solutions on inconspicuous areas to check for colour fastness and adverse reactions before full application. Set up and connect water supply, drainage, and power sources for cleaning equipment in compliance with site safety requirements. Perform spot cleaning and targeted stain removal using hand-held equipment and specialised techniques for specific contaminants (grease, wine, urine, etc.). Monitor carpet drying times and conditions, using air movers or dehumidifiers to accelerate drying where needed.

Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate II or III (ABS skill level 4). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

Your back, knees, and shoulders will take a beating. You're lifting furniture, pushing heavy wet extraction machines, and bending over carpet all day. The work is physically demanding and repetitive, with genuine injury risk. Pay is modest and often depends on completing jobs quickly rather than doing them well, which creates pressure to rush.

Where the jobs are

The practical reality is that carpet cleaning concentrates in major metro areas where there's higher density of residential and commercial properties. Regional work exists but is thinner. Most cleaners work as sole traders or for small local businesses rather than large chains, so jobs follow where populations are densest.

Pay

A$1,342 a week
