Day-to-day

Remove damaged or broken glass panels from vehicles using suction cups, glazing removal tools, and cutting implements without damaging surrounding trim or bodywork. Clean and prepare window frames and surrounding areas by removing old sealants, urethane adhesive, and debris using scrapers and solvents. Apply polyurethane or silicone sealants and adhesives to window frames and glass edges using cartridge guns and hand tools to secure glazing components. Install replacement windscreens, side windows, and rear windows into prepared frames, ensuring proper alignment and a watertight seal. Fit and secure glazing trim, rubber seals, and chrome trim pieces around window openings to complete installations. Inspect installed glass for structural integrity, water leaks, and adherence to manufacturer specifications and Australian Design Rules. Test new installations by running water over seals and checking for leaks before releasing vehicles to customers. Operate powered tools including pneumatic drills, sanders, and suction cup lifting equipment for glass handling and frame preparation.

Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate II or III (ABS skill level 4). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

The work is physically repetitive and demanding. You'll spend hours hunched over, applying sealants by hand with cartridge guns, which causes wrist and shoulder strain. The job involves toxic solvent fumes daily, strict deadlines, and zero room for error because a leaky seal means water damage inside vehicles. Pay growth is limited and tends to plateau.

Where the jobs are

Jobs are mainly in suburban automotive repair workshops and franchised glass replacement chains like Autoglass. Some mobile work exists but requires your own vehicle. Regional towns have fewer opportunities. Remote work is not an option.
