Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate IV or Certificate III with at least two years of on-the-job training (ABS skill level 3). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

Your knees, back, and shoulders will cop a battering from years of reaching overhead, bending into frames, and carrying heavy glass sheets. Hand injuries from sharp edges are a real risk, and once you've got repetitive strain issues, they stick around. Work is patchy during economic downturns when building slows.

Where the jobs are

In practice, work concentrates in metro areas where commercial construction and renovation are constant. Regional areas have less steady work. Most jobs are site-based, not remote. You'll follow the building cycle.
