What this job is
A mechanical engineering draftsperson produces detailed technical drawings and specifications for mechanical components, assemblies, and systems using computer-aided design (CAD) software and manual drafting techniques. Working in manufacturing, engineering consultancies, or design offices, they translate engineer sketches and concepts into precise, dimensioned production drawings that comply with Australian and international standards. They liaise with mechanical engineers and production teams to ensure drawings are accurate, complete, and ready for manufacture or construction.

Day-to-day
Create detailed 2D and 3D mechanical drawings using CAD software such as AutoCAD, SolidWorks, or Inventor from engineer sketches and specifications. Apply Australian and international drafting standards including ISO 128 for technical drawing conventions and the AS 1100 series for dimensioning and tolerancing. Add dimensions, tolerances, surface finishes, and material specifications to drawings to ensure compliance with manufacturing requirements. Generate assembly drawings, exploded views, and parts lists from design briefs and component data. Modify and update existing drawings based on engineering change orders or design revisions. Check drawings for technical accuracy, completeness, and compliance with company standards and relevant regulations. Prepare drawings for production release including title blocks, revision histories, and drawing registers. Communicate with mechanical engineers and design teams to clarify design intent and resolve drawing ambiguities.

Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a diploma, advanced diploma or associate degree (ABS skill level 2). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.
The honest hard part
Most draftspeople max out around mid-level technical wages without moving into engineering or management. The work is precise and repetitive: if you need variety and creative problem-solving, you'll find yourself doing the same dimensioning and standard-checking tasks for years. AI tools are starting to auto-generate basic drawings, which shrinks entry-level opportunities.
Where the jobs are
Regional areas have fewer roles unless near industrial zones. Most positions are office-based, though some companies now offer hybrid work. Design and manufacturing activity is heaviest in major metros.
