Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a bachelor degree or higher (ABS Skill Level 1). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

You'll need to learn specialised tools like MadCap Flare, structured authoring formats, and version control systems: that's a real upfront investment. The bigger trap: you're stuck translating other people's work forever. Subject matter experts guard their knowledge, developers don't always explain things well, and you're often the last person to know when specs change. Pay tends to plateau mid-career, and AI tools can already draft basic documentation, so demand for generic technical writing may shrink.

Where the jobs are

Regional work is rare unless you're in a major manufacturing hub. Remote work is common once you're established, but getting hired usually means being near the organisation's head office. Contract and casual work through agencies is typical, so job security isn't guaranteed.

Pay

A$1,722 a week
