What this job is
An electrical engineering draftsperson produces detailed technical drawings, schematics, and plans for electrical installations, control systems, and power distribution networks used in industrial, commercial, and residential settings. They work from engineering specifications and site surveys to create documentation that guides electricians, engineers, and construction teams through the installation and testing of electrical systems. The role requires proficiency with computer-aided design (CAD) software, knowledge of Australian electrical standards, and the ability to interpret and translate complex engineering concepts into precise, compliant technical drawings.

Day-to-day
Convert electrical engineering sketches and specifications into detailed CAD drawings using software such as AutoCAD Electrical or equivalent platforms. Produce single-line diagrams, multi-line schematics, and wiring diagrams for switchboards, panel layouts, and distribution networks. Design cable schedules, conduit routes, and earthing arrangements in compliance with AS/NZS 3000 (Australian/New Zealand Wiring Rules). Create bill of materials (BOM) listings that itemise electrical components, cable sizes, conduit types, and hardware required for projects. Conduct site surveys and measurements to verify spatial constraints, existing infrastructure, and installation feasibility before drafting. Revise drawings in response to engineer feedback, site changes, or design modifications, maintaining version control and documentation. Prepare control system logic diagrams, programmable logic controller (PLC) wiring schemes, and automation schematics for industrial applications. Cross-reference drawings against Australian Standards (AS/NZS 3008, AS/NZS 60898) for cable ampacity, protection device ratings, and safety compliance.

Can employers fill these jobs
Employers hiring for this occupation were generally able to find suitable applicants in 2025. This measures how hard employers found it to fill jobs. It is not a count of jobs, and it does not say whether the occupation is growing.
Requirements
The standard entry pathway requires a diploma, advanced diploma or associate degree (ABS skill level 2). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.
The honest hard part
You'll spend most days sitting at a desk learning CAD software and Australian electrical standards: there's a steep learning curve if you're not already technical. The work is detail-heavy and mistakes in your drawings can cause safety issues or costly rework on site. Pay tends to plateau unless you move into engineering or project management. Automation may take over some routine drafting tasks over time.
Where the jobs are
In practice, most jobs are in major metros where construction, mining services, and industrial sectors are concentrated. Some regional work exists around resource projects. Almost all positions are office-based, though site survey visits are occasional. Remote work is uncommon because coordination with engineers and on-site teams usually requires in-person contact.
Pay

This is the median for full-time employees who are not managers and are paid at the adult rate, before tax and salary sacrifice. It is a guide to what the work pays, not a wage rate.
