Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a bachelor degree or higher (ABS Skill Level 1). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

Teacher librarians are usually paid on the same scale as classroom teachers, so the extra study may not lift your pay. You'll need both teaching qualifications and a library science degree, which costs time and money upfront. You'll also spend a lot of time on admin tasks like inventory audits and cataloguing that don't feel like teaching.

Where the jobs are

Most positions are in government and independent schools across capital cities and larger regional centres. Rural and remote schools often can't afford dedicated librarians, so jobs there are scarce. Remote work isn't an option since you need to be physically managing the library and teaching students.
