Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a bachelor degree or higher (ABS Skill Level 1). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

Getting a permanent academic job is brutal. Most universities hire on fixed-term contracts (2 to 3 years) for years before offering permanence, if ever. You'll do all the research and teaching work but with zero job security, moving between institutions. Pay plateaus after you reach senior lecturer level, so you won't get rich. Publishing pressure never stops.

Where the jobs are

Regional universities exist but offer limited roles. Most positions require on-campus presence for teaching, though research can be partly remote. Competitive fields like business and engineering have more jobs than humanities.

Pay

A$2,924 a week
