Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate I or compulsory secondary education (ABS skill level 5). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

The work is physically repetitive and happens in cold rooms (0-4°C), which takes a real toll on your body after years. You'll deal with early starts, shift work including weekends, and the monotony can wear you down. Wages top out fairly quickly: there's limited progression unless you move into supervision. Automation may also reduce some packing roles over time.

Where the jobs are

Some work in metropolitan abattoirs and butcheries, but most volume is in regional processing plants where livestock is slaughtered and processed. Remote work doesn't exist in this role.
