External Auditor
An External Auditor independently examines the financial records of organisations to assess whether those records are accurate and comply with relevant laws and standards. The role sits outside the organisation being reviewed, which is what makes the work independent.
What this job is
External Auditors review financial statements, internal controls, and accounting records that belong to a client organisation. The auditor is not an employee of that client. Instead, they are brought in from an accounting firm or a government audit body to form an independent opinion. That opinion is then reported to shareholders, regulators, or other stakeholders who rely on it to make decisions. The work draws on accounting standards, company law, and professional judgement. It is methodical, detail-focused, and carries real accountability.

Day-to-day
A typical day could involve reviewing a client's general ledger entries, testing samples of transactions against supporting documents, and writing up findings in working papers. There are often meetings with a client's finance team to clarify discrepancies or request additional evidence. Towards the end of an audit engagement, time goes into drafting the audit report and discussing conclusions with senior colleagues or partners. Deadlines are real, particularly around financial year-end periods when multiple clients may be in the final stages of their audits at the same time.

About 13,200 people worked in this occupation across Australia at the 2021 Census.
Is it steady
Sampling and transaction testing are increasingly automated in many firms. Professional judgement, risk assessment and client communication tend to stay human-led.
What this role asks for
Bachelor degree or higher (ABS skill level 1)

Requirements
The standard pathway is a bachelor degree in accounting followed by completion of either the Chartered Accountants (CA) programme through Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand, or the CPA programme through CPA Australia (JSA Occupation Profile). Both professional programmes involve structured work experience alongside study. People changing careers from adjacent fields such as finance, law, or business analysis may find some of their existing knowledge transfers, but the accounting degree and professional membership are generally expected by employers. Course options may be available through yourcareer.gov.au or dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe depending on your state and eligibility.
The honest hard part
The hardest part of this role is not the technical accounting knowledge, though that takes time to build. It is the pressure of forming and defending an independent opinion when a client may disagree with your findings. External Auditors are expected to hold their position based on evidence, even when that creates friction. The work is also heavily deadline-driven, with long hours common during peak reporting periods. Career progression in large firms can be slow and competitive, and the path to senior roles typically requires years of consistent performance across a range of client engagements.
