Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a diploma, advanced diploma or associate degree (ABS skill level 2). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

You'll need a diploma or advanced diploma in turf management or horticulture to be competitive, which takes time and money to get. The work is heavily seasonal and weather-dependent, so your schedule gets packed around major sporting events and growing season. Pay stays modest even with experience because most employers are councils, clubs, or smaller facilities with tight budgets. You're also on call for emergencies like disease outbreaks or surface damage before big matches.

Where the jobs are

Golf courses, council ovals, and private clubs need these roles, but they're spread across metro areas rather than concentrated in one spot. Regional towns have fewer positions. Remote work doesn't exist in this role since you need to be on site managing the turf every day.
