Requirements

The standard entry pathway requires a Certificate II or III (ABS skill level 4). Specific qualification requirements vary by employer and state. Some employers may accept equivalent experience. Check yourcareer.gov.au for available courses and dewr.gov.au/skills-reform/free-tafe for subsidised training options.

The honest hard part

The pay ceiling is real. You're processing orders and handling complaints all day without closing sales yourself, so you won't earn commission or bonuses that salespeople get. The work is repetitive data entry and complaint management with limited path upward unless you move into sales proper. You'll also cop the stress when systems break or stock runs out, even though it's not your fault.

Where the jobs are

Concentrated in major metros where retail head offices and wholesale distribution centres cluster. Practical reality: most jobs are in cities rather than regional areas, and they're tied to physical locations (offices, warehouses, retail stores). Remote work is rare. Look towards logistics companies, automotive parts wholesalers, and large retail chains.
